Spend yesterday camping up in the Cascades with some Boy Scouts. Had alot of fun – its been a few months since I backpacked.
I generally backpack in ultralight mode – usually 10 or so pounds of gear. I don’t need much, and what I do carry is minimalistic and multi-purpose. This time I brought a new camera mount (loved it) and my fly rod (just learned to fly fish this summer).
Last night I pitched a simple poncho tarp in a novel way – worked awesome. Kept me dry and comfy even thru a night squall that dumped a fair amount of rain on us.
Here is a photo of my campsite.

Got up in the morning, did some hiking and fly fished in the lake – I caught a nice 10″ rainbow trout on the first cast. Success!
I love the weekends.
PS. Yes that is my fly rod doing double duty as my tarp support. Multi-purpose, the secret to ultralight camping.
