So here are a few of the picts I did manage to shoot in between eating some yummy hors d’ouvres...

Nutcracker Mice, Ready to Invade
Nutcracker Pano
Nutcracker 2009
Now I have to work on the
second weekend of performances that we concluded
yesterday. Oh, and the backstage photos. And the rest
of the individual and class portraits I shot of the
dancers in costume...
Egads. Back to Lightroom...
And here are some of my all time favorites from the
posted galleries.
Nutcracker Season!
Its always a gargantuan task just to manage that many pictures - 10,000 images, each weighing in at 22-25 MB can make for beaucoup file management before the editing/processing step can even start.
One of the fun things this year is that my daughter was dancing as Clara, so here are a few of my quick picks as I start into the editing process...
Many more to come...

EBT - Fall 2009
Dance Wednesday
Dance is a hard thing to shoot. Poor light. Fast moving subjects. Lots of background distraction. I’ve been doing it for years, and have found it to be among the hardest things to get right.
So throwing in a fixed aperture lens (f8 I believe) in this environment was going to be interesting.
Here are a few favorites...
Have a great Wednesday.
Mermaid Favorites
Have a great Friday!
Dance Wednesday
Go Chloe!
EBT's Mermaid - Backstage
Emerald Ballet Theatre’s
production of The Mermaid is in the bag.
Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s familiar story, it
chronicles our young mermaid’s adventures with men,
fish, marriage and sea foam. No wisecracking crabs,
though.
It was a busy week. I shot three rehearsals and the
Saturday evening performance. Total was around 8300
photos in all. Yowsa!
That is plenty to edit, let me assure you. The total
damage was 140 GB of images over the course of 2 days
- a new record for me.
I’ve just posted the first gallery online, a sort of
backstage pass, of the preparations going on
behind the scenes...
Cheers. Have a great Monday, and stay tuned for more Mermaid photos over the next week...
A few from yesterday...
Man, those 5D MKII files are huuuuuge. At 23 MB per image, its really chewing up drive space.
And this shoot is really taxing Lightroom. And I’m on a fast quadcore with oodles of RAM. Miscellaneous file management, importing, converting to DNG and preview building has literally taken most of the day. Lots of “letting her run” for hours and coming back to see it only 1/2 done the task.
One pet peeve I’m bringing up to the boys is that if there are any issues with an import, Lightroom will stop and pop an alert dialog. And in doing so, they stop the subsequent task of building previews. So I set up an import, left to go to church and came back to an alert telling me one file was already in the catalog and it hadn’t built any previews at all.
Gee, thanks.
I could have been 2 hours into that preview building time, instead I get to start now. Ugh.
I spent some time in the backstage documenting the preparations going on. The little girls and their mothers primping is always a good subject. Here is my favorite...
And, of course, there are
the costumes...
More to come, of course,
as soon as those @#$@#4 previews build.
On 8300 23 MB Files.
PS. Shot some video with the 5D MKII as well. Now I
gotta figure out what to actually do with it.

So here are the girls @ EBT doing just that (I had to promise to post these...)
You can see they’re
working on their “steel blue” modeling faces. Very
nice.

Thursday Dance
This is a large class with several exceptional young dancers, and its always a pleasure to document their dedication and hard work. If they could only stop jabbering and listen to Ms. Meghan.
In other news, the sun is
out big time in Seattle today! W00t! Looks like a
great day to get on the bike and enjoy a sunny May
Day.
Thanks to all who downloaded my Adobe Lightroom 2: Workflow for
Busy Photographers PDF tutorial yesterday
(missed it? See here) I’m happy to hear
that people are finding it valuable.
Young Ballerinas
Here is a glimpse of these talented girls...
Have a great Wednesday.
Young Dancer
I really love shooting the dimly-lit areas of the
backstage area during a performance - everyone is
quiet, focused and ready to dance and often makes for
great pictures if you can manage the light.
This young EBT dancer was watching the older girls on
stage and, if she’s anything like my daughter, was
memorizing every step in case she might be called to
“step in” and save the performance.
Well, or at least so she’d be ready in a few
years...
Russian Festival 09
For the last few years my daughter has been asked to dance in the program as a demonstration of her school, Emerald Ballet Theatre, headed by Ms. Viktoria Titova.
I love going because the cultural center is this old movie theatre complex with all kinds of nooks and crannies with lovely stuff to photograph. And that is besides the program.
This year Chloe and a friend were there to perform their solos they’ve been preparing for the Youth America Grand Prix in San Francisco this weekend. In fact, she’s literally preparing to perform onstage at YAGP as I write this. Good luck Chloe!
This year was no different, and I took some lovely photographs of the event. Here is a short peek...

Have a great weekend!
Baile Flamenco!
For those not in the know...
“El baile flamenco is a highly-expressive solo dance, known for its emotional sweeping of the arms and rhythmic stomping of the feet. While flamenco dancers (bailaores and bailaoras) invest a considerable amount of study and practice into their art form, the dances are not choreographed, but are improvised along the palo or rhythm. In addition to the percussion provided by the heels and balls of the feet striking the floor, castanets are sometimes held in the hands and clicked together rapidly to the rhythm of the music, or clicking using just fingers. Sometimes, folding fans are used for visual effect.” From Wikipedia
As a result, the room was alive with all the rhythmic stomping and clicking one could ask for.
This past Nutcracker, these girls danced a part of
the Spanish Dance, which was both fitting and
appreciated by all.
More dance images to come tomorrow.
Young Dancers
Lovely. I heart this lens.
Still editing the larger
set, and I have some fun flash work from today, as
well as some Flamenco dancers to come.
Have a great weekend...
Rehearsal Redux
These images are from a few early December rehearsals in the Emerald Ballet Theatre studio and show some of the “behind the scenes” stuff that goes along with documenting a working ballet studio and the lovely dancers that work so hard at their craft.
Click to see the full gallery...
There is a lesson here
for photographers. Sometimes your initial edits
overlook some really great photos. Sometimes its
worth going back thru some previously edited work to
see if you call cull out some overlooked treasures.
That is all. Have a great day.

EBT Book Arrived!
Anyhow, it looks great.
I ordered the premium paper upgrade and its pretty
nice. Best though, was that the cover wasn’t dented
or dinged the spine text was aligned, the wrap was
well done and the printing was acceptably good.
Overall, I’m quite happy. I’ve sold quite a few of
these already, so here’s hoping the QA remains
consistent.
Also, I’m going to be
traveling for the next week. I’m off to Tahoe with a
couple of kids for a work off-site. Work/ski/work,
you know. So I’ll be a bit more spotty on posts.
Have a great weekend.
2008 Nutcracker Book Available
In the end, I decided to
sell it thru Blurb, despite my recent setbacks with
them, because they are the only ones out there to
handle the printing *and* selling of a book. It
wasn’t an easy choice, but since I tend to sell quite
a few of these books, having to fulfill orders myself
just wasn’t feasible.
Furthermore, I have to admit that Blurb has been
pretty good lately with addressing my concerns. The
last batch of books were not good, but since I know
people inside the company, I was able to get a refund
and a promise to take this to the top.
Hopefully we’re just seeing some growing pains from
Blurb and they’ll clean up the spotty quality I’ve
seen lately. I sure hope so, as this print on demand
stuff is very cool and Blurb really offers a great
front end for selling books without the hassle.
That said, I’ll still be using books from
MyCanvas.com for my portrait clients. Their quality
has been outstanding, their templates are awesome,
and their customer service has been likewise.
Please consider purchasing this Nutcracker book as a
way to support such a wonderful dance studio.
Hundreds of happy dancers will thank you tenfold!
Young Dancers
I was glad I did.
Two images really stood out for me, mostly because they capture the “dance” experience for a new student. The world is big, they are small, and it is these new things that often make them a bit more reserved than they may be elsewhere.
And sometimes the camera catches them in this uneasy state...
Of course, they grow out
of it. Or at least most do. And a few truly learn to
dominate the stage with their smile, their movement
and their personality.
But for these young dancers, this transformation is
still to come.
Two final EBT Nutcracker Galleries
Portraits, etc...
More Nutcracker
This covers all Saturday performances. I have the
Sunday performances still to do the final pass on and
then I’ll post them as well.
Today is Boxing Day - and to celebrate
we’ll be heading to the movies to see Tale of Despereaux or Valkyrie (adults to the
latter). I’m sure there will be a stop at the
bookstore as well, ladened with gift cards as we
are.
Cheers!

Nutcracker Gallery - Dress Rehearsal
This first gallery contains approximately 100 images from Friday evening’s dress rehearsal.
Here are a few of my
favorites so far...
More to come...
Nutcracker? Check!
I shot 4 performances of EBT’s Nutcracker. About 8000 images total. I’ve already taken the initial pass thru them in Lightroom (what a timesaver) and trashed 2000 of them immediately. About 1200 of the remainder are ready for a second pass - I’m going to be busy with final edits and organization over the next day or two.
I’m very pleased with what I’m seeing so far. As I tell the parents who comment favorably on my work, it certainly helps to have beautiful subject matter.
So if you are an EBT parent, its coming. Have a great Monday.
PS. On top of everything else, we got over a foot of snow. Makes for interesting times...
Ballet Rehearsals
More Ballet Than You Can Shake a Stick At!
I found several images I’m quite happy with, and I have a pretty large gallery uploading right now.

Got the Cover!
Ha! I wish. I’m getting on a plane Tuesday to go down to the Bay Area for the week and a friends wedding on the weekend in Joshua Tree. Its going to be another hectic week, so blogging will be as sporadic as it was this past week...
While in Montana, I shot a series of portraits of my brother and his kids - I expect to have those edited and ready to review soon.
I’m pretty excited on my
latest magazine cover for City Arts Magazine here in
Seattle.
I shot the cover and the
images for the 4 page article inside. I was pretty
excited as this is a great way to highlight Viktoria
and her work with the young ballerinas of Emerald Ballet Theatre.
More EBT photography here...
If you have not gotten tickets for the EBT Nutcracker this year,
you’re running out of time. They
always sell out.
Beginning Ballet
Pity, really, as some of our youngest dancers make great subjects; they’re just starting down this path and full of energy and excitement for dance.
Here are a few pictures from a recent visit with EBT’s youngest ballerinas.
Nutcracker Rehearsals Begin!
We have a few new dancers for the Nutcracker this year. They look to be wonderful dancers and a great addition to our production.
Emerald Ballet - New Season Begins!
I managed to get into the studio this week for a bit of shooting on Tuesday evening. Here are a few from that session...
Here is to another season

Soccer Academy
We drove down to drop my oldest son off at a BYU soccer academy for the week. He gets to stay in the dorms with a roommate and its quite exciting for him. Having older kids is proving to be as cool as when they were little - we have developed a great relationship built on trust and mutual respect. He's aces in my book.
Go Aidan.
Here are a few images from today...
I'll be here all week. I
brought my middle son as well, and we're going to do
some fun things together - including hitting an
amusement park and some other fun stuff. He's equally
excited.
I'm still working thru images from last week's
EBT performance Tales
from the Mediterranean and hope to be
done soon. I'm really happy with the images thus
far, so expect a few new galleries soon on the EBT
website.
Have a great Monday.
Rehersal Time
Funnin' Around
Of course, that only encouraged the studio denizens to get silly on me. To good ends, I might add...
In what can only be
considered as an ode to a long-ago decade (you know,
the one I grew up in, the one they were not even
alive for) they hammed it up with all the silliness
they could muster. Still working on the official
picts for the night, but these two struck me as quite
fun.
I was also in the studio to shoot pictures of my
daughter for stock. Got a few hundred exposures and
and my daughter (and model) informed me she wasn't
feeling so good. Time to pack it all up and try again
another time. In looking back at the images, there is
still some great images for the intended target. I'll
be working on those next.
As an aside, I'll be out of town next week, riding
mountain bikes with "da boyz" in southern Utah. Look
forward to big hit bikes, sun (hopefully) and lots of
smiling men enjoying "not work". Here In fact, here I
am, last October "not working".
I'm giddy with anticipation...
Cheers!
More Squares
More Portraits
I shot pictures of the younger girls, then the older dancers. Most of the latter didn't turn out very well, but this one of Meghan (EBT instructor extraordinaire) was quite sublime if I do say so myself.
New Emerald Ballet Theatre Galleries
Please peruse the galleries and enjoy. All images are available for purchase vie the options on each image frame.
Other images from the Emerald Ballet Theatre archive are available for viewing/purchasing in the EBT Portfolio page.
EBT Shoot
The last image was
literally the first image shot - just something to
see if the camera was picking up that it was tethered
(it never did, ack). Funny how sometimes something
unexpected turns out beautiful every once in a while.
Viktoria was quite pleased and they've been sent off
to the design firm doing the poster in both black and
white and color.
Client Shoot
The shoot was to create some images for the advertising of an upcoming performance, a new choreographic work entitled Tales from the Mediterranean that will debut in June of this year. The dancers are hard at work on it already and I've been attending rehearsals as my travel schedule permits.
I finally got around to hanging a 12' seamless in the studio - mounted on the walls using the Bogen Expan system - I really liked how easy this was to put up and will make my life so much easier when doing things like this, especially when I'm doing pictures of dancers on point with their arms/legs extended. In the past that has required a certain amount of post-production work on Photoshop to make them fit (seam carving, if you please). Saves all that time putting up/taking down the seamless backdrop supports.
Nice.
I'll be posting those shortly.

On an unrelated note, its my 20 year High School
reunion this summer. 20 years. Wow.
As result, it seems that people have started crawling
out of the woodwork lately. I've never been a big
Facebook person, and remain mostly uninterested in
it, but my range of new-old friends has expanded on
said site. La Tee Da.
March!
Welcome
March. Already.
Yesterday we attended a Russian festival - our
daughter was performing a dance as a showcase for EBT
- the artistic director is from Russia and danced for
the Bolshoi - so her roots are deep in the Russian
community here in Seattle. This was a short
performance, to a Chopin piece, mostly to inspire the
crowd to send their Russian girls/boys to learn to
dance at EBT.
She did a great job. Here is a picture from that
piece...
Here is another EBT dancer doing a more modern
piece...
Wednesday at the Studio
I just found out I'll be traveling again next week. I
had plans to do a studio shoot with Viktoria
(artistic director of EBT) next week, but it looks
like I'll have to postpone it for another week. March
is already jam packed with scheduled shoots, travel
and a mix of other important happenings. Wait, its
March? Wow.
I spent a few hours in the studio yesterday and
captured a few images I'm quite happy with.
Joe McNally
I ran across a post by Joe McNally, a well known
photographer, talks about his affinity for dance
photography.
Read it here
I liked this part here best:
"Put a dancer in front of my lens, and Joe be happy
monkey. I feel a real affinity for dancers, actually,
because, just like photographers, they are hard
working, creative and underpaid."
Dance Photography
Dance is something I got sucked into a few years ago
when my daughter started pirouetting her way across
the marley.
She had been talking about it since she could talk
and she was pretty sure of herself. She spent most of
those early years in a tutu or some form of
ballet-related costume. Here is a picture of her at
her two-year old birthday party, appropriately
garbed.
My wife had danced as a child, and was still doing so
when I met her in 1991. I loved picking her up after
her dance classes, although I was much to silly to go
in and actually watch. It took a few more years to
develop a taste for it myself. When we moved to the
Seattle area, my wife went off on a quest to find a
studio that could teach our budding dancer. She
didn't want a
rinky-dink dance studio in the
strip mall
- you know the kind that teach ballet, hip hop, jazz,
clogging and every other dance under the sun - all
with the inherent cuteness, but with mediocrity at
the center. She wanted something more, although the
idea of PNB (the giant gorilla of the area) was a bit
overwhelming. So she stumbled across a small studio
in Bellevue that had an interesting pedigree - a
small studio, very intimate, with an artistic
director who had danced at the Bolshoi (the big
gorilla of the world). It was small, unassuming, and
mostly run by volunteers and people who cared about
dance. And better yet, Viktoria (the artistic
director) was just what we were looking for- someone
with real training and connections that could really
make a difference if Chloe decided dance was for her.
So Chloe started at 4 years of age - on her birthday
no less. I took pictures of her, here and there, but
never was able to get the access or the time to do
more. As Chloe grew, it became more important to her.
Happily, this little ballet studio was really focused
on performances (even if they couldn't publicize them
very well) and Chloe began racking up the stage time.
And solos. She was in heaven. At some point, my wife
approached me about doing a bit more with the studio
(she was on the board of directors by then) and after
some negotiations, I started shooting weekly
sessions. First with my daughter's class and then
with the rest of the classes. It was inspiring,
beautiful and enjoyable. I'm very happy with the
results of that year long project. You can see this
work here:
Well, as you know, things can go awry. Soon after I
stared my project, Viktoria and that little studio
had a schism. Silly stuff really, but it mainly
focused around respect. So she left to form her own
studio. We decided that, while we loved that little
studio, that we really needed to follow Viktoria as
she was able to provide the training Chloe needed. So
we did. And that was the birth of
Emerald Ballet
Theatre.
The new studio has grown over the past year. I've
done a lot of work for them and have enjoyed
myself even more. My work has become an important
part of the studio - from the walls, to the
website, to the posters and advertising. That and
I'm there a fair amount and have gotten to know
many of the dancers. Its great to know these
beautiful girls and see them developing their
talent and at the same time providing a wonderful
little community for my daughter. She loves it and
is up to 8 hours a week. Seriously. We are so
proud of her and her accomplishments. You can see
the work here:
We still miss the old studio. There was some wonderful people there, and it was a sad day for us to leave, but it was the right decision. EBT is growing and I'm loving the work I do in the dance studio. If you have some time, explore the galleries linked to above. Cheers!
EBT Images
EBT Screensaver Available
I've added a screensaver of EBT images to the
download
page.
Emerald Ballet Theatre - Screensaver 1
This screensaver is Windows only (sorry Mac people - there isn't a good screensaver creation tool for the Mac that I could find - and yes I'm a Mac person) and is about 72 MB in size. The screensaver is shareware - it will show only 5 images until you register it. After registration you'll see a selection of EBT images - for a total of 150 images in all. Many of these images have been on display at EBT, used in the studio's marketing and publicity materials and online in our EBT galleries. Registration is only $10 and will brighten any monitor. All proceeds from your screensaver purchase go directly to EBT. There are options to buy a downloadable copy, or for those who recoil at a 72 MB download, you can purchase a CD version for the same cost (plus a nominal shipping charge). Thanks.
Client Work & Updates for EBT
Spent the morning retouching and printing a series of
pictures for a client, and wanted to share some of
the results here...
I also spent yesterday printing out a grouping of 11x14 images to hang at Emerald Ballet Theatre. This will be my first hanging of color work at the studio - all taken from the two new galleries (galleries 15 and 16 respectively) posted yesterday. Peruse them if you get a chance, and if you are EBT, make sure to take a look at the new prints I'll be hanging today. Cheers!
New Emerald Ballet Theatre Galleries
I've posted two new
Emerald Ballet
Theatre
galleries to my portfolio pages.
These two galleries encompass about 60 new images in
total. You'll notice that there are an increasing
number of color images as of late. I've been moving
toward some color interpretations lately - and I've
been enjoying the results.
Please peruse these two galleries and enjoy.

I'm heading to San Jose for a big company shindig
next week - might be a bit more sporadic with the

Also, I took Chloe to PNB's Romeo et Juliette tonight. It
was gorgeous. Beautiful. Go see it if you live in

was so much visually to take in.

Here are a couple of pictures of Viktoria - founder and danseuse extraordinaire...
Shoot: Summer Intensive Ad
I took about 30 exposures and came up with a gallery of potential images and sent it off to the decision makers. I love assignments like these that leave it mostly wide open for me to explore. For this shot, I had a chance to bring out my giant Calumet 3-D Reflector and positioned 2 lights shooting right into this massive diffusion unit (one above, one below). I love what this setup can give for shoots like this.
Here are a few out-takes from the past few days. Sometimes the goofy stuff in between the "serious" stuff can be wonderful.
Also, this evening saw me working on a custom book
for a client in-between print sessions - I've had
several orders come in over the past few days (10 or
so prints from the Nutcracker galleries from Emerald Ballet Theatre) as well
as some orders for the audition photos I shot last
Wednesday. A couple of those required some
extensive Photoshop work as I have foolishly been
neglecting the need for a 13' backdrop and tried
to fit things onto a 9' one instead. The
arabesques really just don't fit without some
serious focus on the dancers part (all the while
also trying to nail technique), so needless to
say, I had some stray hands/feet.
Time to pick one up...

There are some wonderful images in these galleries
and I'm glad to see parents/grandparents taking
advantage of this opportunity to have high-quality

the excellent The Online Photographer blog)
that links to a sizeable gallery of free tutorials

Here is an photo I took last night at EBT friday
night...
The new Canon 24-70 L 2.8
lens I purchased is actually working out quite well.
Its sharp and although not quite wide enough (argh,
1.6 crop factor!) its pretty nice. I'm afraid I'll
have to go to primes for the same IQ as my Leica
glass (if even then) but its more than acceptable. I
should really look into putting Leica R glass on this
camera, but I hear things about flakey adapters (and
I loose AF). Primes? No AF? Sounds like my M8...
Audition Photos
Thankfully, Viktoria
(EBT's founder and artistic
director) was working with us to make sure things
were perfect and this one was the last frame shot
in what was a grueling shoot.
I believe the lead up to this particular shot was her
encouraging the dancer to "fly away like a beautiful
bird."
And I believe she did...

Nutcracker? Check!
Both performances on Saturday sold out, and the crowds enjoyed an amazing show - especially considering the time frame we had to put it all together. Congrats to the dancers, to EBT's staff, and all the volunteers for pulling it all together. From a new studio opening in September to this is really meteoric. Apart from the traditional dancers, we had a crew of Brasilian Capoeira artists perform as the core of the solider crew, and they did an amazing job of introducing their blend of martial art and dance into the familiar story line. A stroke of genius and I hope it becomes a long partnership.
I was there for both performances, but spent most of my time selling calendars and setting up and prepping for the planned Nutcracker character shoot. We did the traditional "get your picture" with the characters. It was pulled together in short order, but I was pleased with the result. We also managed to get the EBT calendars in time to sell at the show and sold out of the first run by the end of the second performance.
I've still got a few hundred pictures to go thru from the dress rehearsal - Lightroom stands up well to the task - I've cranked 4000 images thru it this week! I also have 2 books on order to put together and shipped off to the printer. So I'm probably in for a few late nights this week...
Emerald Ballet Theatre
Emerald Ballet Theatre
I've been working with Emerald Ballet Theatre since early this summer. Several good friends of ours started this eastside studio/company this year and I'm working with them much as I have done for Ballet Belleuve. Its a real privalege to work with such great dancers, regardless of where they dance.
Please enjoy the galleries.
